A chance to revive a singing tradition last contested around 40 years ago?

With the impending release of the London 1 South fixtures for the season ahead, discussion has grown around a rightly heralded rugby singing competition held in the 1960's and 70's for the right to hold the much vaunted 'Golden Jockstrap'. The trophy was fought for by London based rugby clubs and was often held at Wasps ground in Sudbury, Cornish winning it for 4 or 5 seasons in a row in the 70's. Rumours abound of a tremendous post match singing battle between hosts London Welsh RFC and LCRFC held in December 1972 at Old Deer Park following a clash between two of the respective teams, and with these two great singing clubs facing off against each other for the first ever time at 1st team level in the season ahead, that particular fixture is likely to see both choirs tuning up for a match likely to transcend the action that precedes it on the grass - whether the original Golden Jockstrap can be relocated in time is open to conjecture!
