Saturday saw the 2s putting out another strong squad for an ‘Away’ game at our training ground and the big 4g pitch of Rosslyn Park.
A few last-minute shuffles left us light in the backs. Lee Humphries moving to Flyhalf and backrow stalwart Chris Hayes filling in at outside centre alongside Mo Alothman.
Kicking off into a strong breeze, Cornish struggled out of the blocks with a strong looking Park side blitzing three early tries and Cornish looking second best across the pitch. It was starting to look like it could be a long afternoon but following the third try Cornish, led by some big some great turnovers and a couple of big carries in the back row and centres started to get some belief in their game and put some pressure on Rosslyn Park. Luke Waller’s introduction as an injury sub adding some physicality across the pitch and upping that of the rest of his teammates. Only some individual errors and a very dubiously dis-allowed try prevented Cornish from putting their own points on the board in the rest of the half.
19-0 down but with momentum and the wind behind them, Cornish flew out of the blocks in the second half. Big carries and some well worked phases resulted in an early try for Lee Humphries, which he converted. Possession was now all Cornish, hard yards being made by almost everyone.. Unfortunately Cornish again were their own wort enemy, a missed kick to touch on a penalty followed by some poor positioning and a missed tackle allowed the Rosslyn Park fullback to run in a 60 metres try and the score was 24 – 7.
From here the rest of the game was all Cornish even with having to drop to 14 men for uncontested scrums. Jacob Giles finishing a second try, also converted by Humphries and with 8 mins on the clock Joel Williams finishing another try from a Nick Goss line break. The less said about Joel’s quick conversion attempt the better. 24 – 19 with just over 5 mins on the clock. Another missed kick to touch and some strong Rosslyn Park defence just about kept Cornish out until the final whistle.
Lots of positives particularly from the second half but Cornish do remain their own worst enemy at times! Must win against Chiswick up next.
